Directions

Milk thistle herb

Milk thistle (Silybum Marianum) is a plant of the daisy family and in particular of the subfamily Carduoideae, which owes its name to the ring thistle (Carduus). The milk thistle, which can grow up to one and a half metres, is native mainly to southern to central Europe, and the steppes of North Africa, and grows as a biennial plant. It has the thorns typical of thistles and forms burdocks in autumn.

Milk thistle is very rich in silymarin. Silymarin is a natural mixture of different plant substances: silibinin, isosilibinin, silychristin and silydianin. Silymarin is said to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

The most common uses of milk thistle include allergies, inflammations, gynaecological disorders, bilious complaints, gallbladder pain, vascular disorders, ulcers, skin rashes, cramps, liver complaints, gastrointestinal complaints, spleen complaints, muscle pain, neuralgia, rheumatism and poisoning.

We recommend milk thistle herb especially as an excellent remedy for the liver. It has a detoxifying effect and helps the liver cells to regenerate. Milk thistle can also be used as a herbal gastrointestinal remedy for dyspeptic (digestive) complaints.

Application

A particularly simple way to use it is in the form of milk thistle tea. For this purpose, add 1-2 teaspoons of dried milk thistle herb to 250 ml of boiling water and let the tea steep for 10-20 minutes before straining.
