Description of medicinal herbs
History
The healing power of thyme has been known for many centuries. Already Hildegard von Bingen recommended thyme for respiratory distress or whooping cough and also in older herbal books such as the Gart der Gesundheit (Garden of Health) or the book of the Italian doctor Pietro Andrea Mattioli, thyme was recommended for many complaints such as chest pains, to stimulate the appetite, for digestive complaints, for warts or for wound treatment. It was used as honey, pure, as a poultice, in vinegar or boiled in wine.
The title of medicinal plant of the year, which thyme was awarded in 2006, shows that thyme is still a versatile medicinal and aromatic herb today.
