Arthrospira platensis is a filamentous, blue-green cyanobacteria (formerly known as blue-green algae) that grows in alkaline, salty waters. Its cell filaments (trichomes) are spirally wound and consist of numerous, spherical cells without a nucleus. The cell walls contain photosynthetic pigments such as phycocyanin, which give it its typical blue-green colour. Arthrospira platensis is autotrophic and carries out oxygen photosynthesis, similar to higher plants.
