The centaury (Centaurium erythraea) from the gentian family (Gentianaceae) is a herbaceous plant that grows to a height of 10 to 50 cm with lanceolate leaves. Its delicate, pinkish-red flowers bloom from June to September in umbel-like inflorescences. It grows best in sunny, nutrient-poor soils in Europe, North Africa and West Asia.

Indications

Loss of appetite, digestive complaints. Hildegard von Bingen recommends centaury for loss of appetite, stomach complaints and gall bladder disorders.

How to use

Pour approx. 150 ml of boiling water over 1 teaspoon (approx. 2 g) of crushed centaury and strain after 15 minutes. Drink a cup of freshly prepared tea 2-3 times a day half an hour before meals to stimulate the appetite, and after meals to treat indigestion.

You can also prepare the tea more effectively as a cold extract by infusing ½ to 1 tsp of centaury in 1 cup of water for 6-8 hours. Then strain the tea and gently warm it to drinking temperature. Two cups of this tea should be drunk daily in small sips before meals.
