Armoracia rusticana, syn. horseradish, root, sliced, from certified organic cultivation
Horseradish root belongs to the cruciferous family (Brassicaceae) and is a perennial, herbaceous plant. It forms a long, fleshy taproot that is light brown on the outside and white on the inside. The plant has large, lanceolate leaves and small, white flowers arranged in clusters.
For centuries, horseradish has been valued both as a spice and in traditional medicine. Originally from southeastern Europe and western Asia, horseradish quickly spread across the continent and was already used in ancient times by the Romans and Greeks. In the Middle Ages, horseradish was a widely used spice and was also cultivated in monastery gardens, where it was used both as a medicinal plant and to refine food.
