Schinus molle, pink pepper, whole pink berries, from certified organic cultivation
Pink peppercorns come from an evergreen tree in the sumac family that grows in tropical and subtropical regions. The tree can grow up to 10 meters tall and has feathery, leathery leaves and small, yellowish-pink flowers in dense clusters. The reddish berries grow in panicle-like clusters.
In Ayurveda, Schinus berries, also known as Peruvian pepper, are valued for their warming properties. They are considered to balance the Vata and Kapha doshas.
Schinus berries originate from Central and South America from trees such as Schinus molle (Peruvian pepper tree) and Schinus terebinthifolius (Brazilian pepper tree). Botanically, they belong to the sumac family (Anacardiaceae) and are not related to true pepper (Piper nigrum).
Historically, the bright pink-red berries were used by indigenous cultures in South America centuries ago: in the Andean region, peoples such as the Wari and later the Incas used the ripe fruits to make fermented beverages such as chicha de molle and as a flavoring ingredient in everyday life.
