The chilli threads come from the Capsicum annuum plant, which belongs to the nightshade family. The elongated, narrow fruits are used, which are gently dried after harvesting and cut into fine threads. This traditional processing method preserves the natural colour, structure and characteristic appearance of the chilli.
Originally native to Central and South America, chillies arrived in Europe in the 15th century and quickly spread along trade routes. They soon became an integral part of many regional cuisines. The name ‘Cayenne’ comes from the city of the same name in French Guiana, which historically played an important role in the spice trade.
