Pirus malus is an outdated botanical name for the cultivated apple, which is now known as Malus domestica. The apple tree belongs to the rose family (Rosaceae) and usually grows as a medium-sized deciduous tree with a broad, spreading crown. Its white to pink flowers appear in spring, while the mostly spherical, edible fruits ripen in late summer to autumn.
