Olibanum gum boswelia serrata, cut, from conventional cultivation
Boswellia serrata, also known as Indian frankincense, is a tree from the Burseraceae family that grows up to 8 metres tall and is characterised by its smooth, papery bark and gnarled branches. Its odd-pinnate leaves and small, fragrant, whitish flowers are typical. The fruit of the tree is a small, five-lobed capsule. The tree produces an aromatic resin that is used as incense and has medicinal applications. Boswellia serrata grows mainly in dry, hilly areas of India and is well adapted to dry conditions.
