Juglandis folium (syn. Folia Juglandis), green outer fruit shell, cut, from certified organic cultivation
The walnut comes from the walnut tree, a plant species from the walnut family (Juglandaceae). The deciduous tree can grow up to 30 meters tall and is known for its spreading crown and feathery, aromatic leaves. The fruit consists of a green outer husk, a hard inner shell, and the edible seed, the walnut kernel. The walnut shell is the woody stone shell of the fruit. It is characterized by its high strength, its characteristic light to dark brown color, and its coarse fibrous structure. After removing the kernel, the shell is dried and cut for further processing.
The walnut tree has a long cultural history and is one of the oldest trees used by humans. Juglans regia originally comes from the Near and Central East. Walnuts were already known and appreciated in ancient times in the Persian Empire, ancient Greece, and the Roman Empire. The Romans eventually spread the walnut tree throughout much of Europe.
