Today, matcha is considered the epitome of Japanese tea culture - yet its true roots lie in China. As early as the Tang Dynasty, tea leaves were steamed, pressed, and ground into a powder, which was then whisked with hot water.
The decisive step toward Japan was taken in 1191 by the Zen Buddhist monk Myōan Eisai, who brought back from his journey to China not only tea seeds but also the knowledge of how to prepare powdered tea. In his work Kissa Yōjōki, he described tea as a healing remedy for body and mind - a cornerstone of Japanese tea culture.
In the monasteries, matcha became much more than a drink: it accompanied the monks’ long meditations, fostered inner concentration, and, as an offering to Buddha, was an integral part of monastic daily life.
