Black Kampot pepper originates from the region of the same name in southern Cambodia, where pepper cultivation was first mentioned in the 13th century. During the French colonial period, Kampot pepper gained particular importance as it was traded as one of the highest quality peppers in the region and was widely used in French cuisine.
Traditional cultivation methods remained largely unchanged for many generations: pepper vines were grown on natural support plants, harvested by hand, and sun-dried. Despite political upheavals in the 20th century, local farmers continued to adhere to these traditional practices.
