The hop flowers come from a perennial climbing plant belonging to the Cannabaceae family. Botanically speaking, these are the female flowers, which grow in cone-shaped clusters and are stripped after harvesting so that the individual petals are separated and easy to handle. Gentle drying preserves most of the colour, aroma and characteristic ingredients.
Hops are native to Europe and Western Asia and were already cultivated in monastery and farm gardens in the Middle Ages. Historical sources describe their use not only as an ingredient in beer, but also in herbal medicine and traditional plant applications.
