Name: Goldenrod (German: Goldrute)
Latin Name: Solidago virgaurea
Product Form: Herb, cut, certified organic
Ingredients: 100% goldenrod herb (Solidago virgaurea), cut, from certified organic cultivation.

Goldenrod, with its brilliant yellow, is one of the most striking sights of the European late summer, growing in large colonies on gravel patches, roadsides and sunny slopes. The cut herb is excellent for preparing a mild, spicy-floral tea.

Use

As a tea: Cut goldenrod herb is well suited for preparing a mild, floral-spicy infusion, also blended with other herbs such as nettle or chamomile. See the "Preparation" section for details.

A traditionally valued summer herb: Goldenrod is among the herbs long valued in traditional European herbal lore, where it is mentioned in connection with wellbeing and natural fluid intake. Notably, goldenrod has also been used as a natural dye, its high flavonoid content gives wool a rich, golden-yellow tone. For more on use, see the "Application" tab.

About the Plant

Solidago virgaurea belongs to the daisy family (Asteraceae) and is found across nearly all of Europe, Asia, North America and North Africa. The perennial plant forms upright stems with narrow, lance-shaped leaves and characteristic bright yellow flower panicles, blooming from July to September. It is important to distinguish it from the introduced Canadian goldenrod, which displaces the native species in many areas.

Other names: Goldenrod is also known as woundwort in folk tradition.

Habitat and harvest season: True goldenrod grows preferentially on fields, meadows, in open woodlands and on sunny slopes, sometimes also at higher elevations. The flowering herb is traditionally harvested in late summer.

Historical roots: The folk name "woundwort" points to goldenrod's long tradition in European herbal lore. Because of its characteristic golden-yellow tone, the plant was historically also used to dye textiles, a tradition that continues among natural dyers today.

Key Compounds:

  • Flavonoids (including quercetin, rutin): responsible for the golden-yellow colour and dyeing properties of the herb
  • Saponins: secondary plant compounds typical of many herbs
  • Essential oil: gives the herb its characteristic aroma
  • Tannins: secondary plant compounds with astringent properties
