Origin & botany

Typical mountain plant of the Alps (up to 1.40 m high), with hollow stems, elliptical leaves, and yellow flowers from June to August. Perennial, up to 60 years old; root up to 1 m long, brown on the outside, yellow on the inside. Grows on pastures in Germany, France, Spain, and the Balkans.

History

For many centuries, gentian has been valued as a medicinal plant, especially for digestive problems, but also for general weakness and anemia. The well-known herbalist Kneipp also recommended growing gentian in the garden so that its healing powers could be accessed at any time. Yellow gentian, whose name goes back to the Illyrian king Gentis – a ruler skilled in healing who used gentian during the plague – was valued early on for its intense bitter compounds.

Gentian root is available in pharmacies and herbal shops and is particularly effective due to its strong bitter compounds.
