Traditional European herbal lore: Dandelion leaves are among the herbs long valued in traditional European folk medicine, where they are mentioned in connection with spring and digestion. This plant knowledge is appreciated to this day for enjoyment purposes and as a companion to everyday wellbeing. For more on use, see the "Application" tab.
About the Plant
Dandelion is one of the most adaptable plants in Europe, growing almost anywhere, from meadows to pavement cracks. A distinctive feature is its hollow, milky-sapped stem, which releases a bitter, white liquid when broken. Its jagged leaves gave the plant its French name "dent-de-lion," lion's tooth, later adopted into English as dandelion. Notably, the yellow flower heads open in the morning and close in the evening, which is why dandelion was once seen as a kind of natural weather and time indicator.
Dandelion as a coffee substitute: Less well known is the use of roasted dandelion root as a coffee substitute, particularly during times of economic hardship in the 19th and 20th centuries. The leaves themselves were valued mainly as tea and wild vegetable, a tradition that lives on in wild herb cuisine today.
