Cubeb pepper is the dried, unripe fruit of the Piper cubeba plant, which is native to Indonesia. Due to its small stem, it is also known as “stem pepper.”
Historical significance
Originally from Southeast Asia (Indonesia, India, China), cubeb pepper was exported to Europe by Arab traders from the 10th century onwards and was considered an expensive spice and remedy in monastery apothecaries during the Middle Ages. It was used as a substitute for pepper, in gingerbread, wines, and as an aphrodisiac before cultivation on Java in the 16th century made it more affordable.
Today, connoisseurs appreciate the whole organic berries for their unique bouquet in modern cuisine.
