Citrus aurantium L., Aurantii amar. cortex, finely chopped peel, from certified organic cultivation

The peel of the bitter orange, Citrus aurantium L., was already a valuable commodity in the Middle Ages, distributed throughout Europe via Mediterranean ports. In old monastery gardens, the aromatic fruit was a sought-after ingredient for traditional cooking and spice recipes.

The dried and finely chopped peel found a permanent place in Renaissance confectionery and baking traditions in particular.
With the development of the early spice and tea trade, its importance continued to grow, as its characteristic citrus aroma was widely appreciated. It also played an important role in historical recipes for fragrance blends and liqueur preparations.
