Cardamom is a tropical plant from the ginger family (Zingiberaceae). It grows as a perennial shrub with long, narrow leaves and an upright stem. The small green flowers appear in clusters and form aromatic, triangular capsules containing the seeds that are used as a spice.

In Ayurveda, cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum) is valued for its balancing and calming effects. Particularly beneficial for the Pitta dosha due to its cooling effect, it also helps to balance Vata and Kapha.
