Cardamom is a tropical plant of the ginger family (Zingiberaceae). It grows as a perennial shrub with long, narrow leaves and an erect stem. The small green flowers appear in clusters and develop into the aromatic, three-sided capsules that contain the seeds used as a spice.
Ayurveda values cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum) for its harmonising and soothing effect. Particularly beneficial for the Pitta-Dosha, as it has a cooling effect, it also helps to balance Vata and Kapha.
