Cleavers is one of the best-known wild herbs in Central Europe and has a long tradition in folk medicine. Also known as Goosegrass, this herb has long been used as a tea and for external applications. This Cleavers tea comes from certified cultivation and is gently dried and cut.
Usage and Effects
As a tea: The dried cleavers is ideal for preparing cleavers tea. Burdock tea is traditionally used to support the urinary tract and to generally stimulate the metabolism. In folk medicine, it is also used in spring cleanses and during fasting periods, for example in combination with other detoxifying herbs such as stinging nettle or dandelion. For skin care: In some regions, cleavers is also used topically. Traditionally, infusions or extracts were used for skin care, for example to treat mild skin irritations.
As an ingredient in herbal blends: Cleavers combines well with other herbs that have purgative and diuretic properties. Classic combination partners in folk medicine include horsetail, birch leaves, and goldenrod.

About the Plant
Cleavers (Galium aparine) is an annual, herbaceous plant from the Rubiaceae family. The stems are square-shaped and can reach heights of 40 to 150 cm. Characteristic are the narrow, lanceolate leaves, which are arranged in whorls of six to eight leaves around the stem. Stems, leaves, and fruits are covered with small, hook-shaped bristles that cling to clothing, animal fur, and other surfaces. This is the origin of its common name, “sticky weed.” From April to August, small, inconspicuous whitish-greenish flowers appear.
Other names: Cleavers is also commonly known as sticky weed, sticky herb, burdock, garden burdock, clinging weed, spiked weed, or cat’s-tail.
Distribution and Harvesting Season: Cleavers is widespread throughout Europe and grows primarily along forest edges, hedgerows, in thickets, and on nutrient-rich roadsides. The harvesting season for the herb is between April and July, before flowering begins or shortly thereafter.
Historical roots: Cleavers is one of the oldest known medicinal plants in Central Europe. Dioscorides and later medieval herbalists such as Hieronymus Bock described the herb and its uses. In traditional folk medicine, it was considered a proven herb for supporting the urinary tract and internal cleansing. Especially in the spring, it was used as a diuretic herb for spring cleansing regimens. Maria Treben recommended common bedstraw in a similar context.
