Campechianum Lign. conc., bluewood, cut, from conventional cultivation
Bluewood, also known as campeche wood, comes from trees of the genus Haematoxylum, especially Haematoxylum campechianum, which grow in Central America and the Caribbean. The wood is characterized by its dark red to violet color, which can take on deep blue tones when worked. Bluewood is mainly used as a natural dye to color textiles, wool, silk or leather in shades of blue, purple and black.
Historically, bluewood was an important export item and was also used in art, for example to dye inks and paints.
