History:
The healing properties of thyme have been known for many centuries. Hildegard von Bingen recommended thyme for shortness of breath or whooping cough, and in older herbals such as *The Garden of Health* or the book by the Italian physician Pietro Andrea Mattioli, thyme was recommended for many ailments, such as chest pain, to stimulate the appetite, for digestive complaints, for warts, or for wound treatment. It was used as honey, pure, as a poultice, or simmered in vinegar or wine. The fact that thyme remains a versatile medicinal and culinary herb today is evidenced by the title “Medicinal Plant of the Year,” which thyme was awarded in 2006.
