Latin Name: Tropaeolum majus
Product Form: Herb, finely chopped, certified organic
Ingredients: 100% nasturtium herb (Tropaeolum majus) from certified organic cultivation, finely chopped.
Nasturtium is one of the most striking herbs in European gardens and has been prized for generations for its distinctive, peppery-spicy aroma. In its finely chopped form, this aroma unfolds particularly quickly and evenly - ideal for tea, salads, and creative cooking.
Uses and Effects
As a culinary herb with a spicy kick: The finely chopped variety is particularly well-suited for infusions, as the smaller leaf pieces release their aroma more quickly than coarsely chopped herbs. For further preparation instructions, see the “Preparation” tab.
Traditional Culinary and Herbal Culture: In European herbal tradition, nasturtium has long been recognized as a spicy ingredient and a symbol of culinary diversity. Its use is based on traditional botanical knowledge and is intended solely for enjoyment, without any medicinal purpose.
About the Plant
Tropaeolum majus is native to the Andes of South America and belongs to the nasturtium family (Tropaeolaceae). This annual, climbing plant produces round, slightly domed leaves and bright red, orange, or yellow flowers, both of which are edible. It was introduced to Europe in the 16th century and quickly became a popular garden and culinary plant.
Other Names: In German-speaking countries, Tropaeolum majus is also known as “Große Kapuzinerkresse” (large nasturtium) or “Indianerkresse” (Indian cress). The botanical genus name Tropaeolum is derived from the Greek word for “trophy” and refers to the shield-shaped leaves.
Cultivation and Harvest: The herb is harvested during its main growing season and gently dried to best preserve its color and aroma. Its sharp, spicy note comes from mustard oil glycosides, which are also found in watercress and horseradish and give the plant its characteristic flavor.
