Almost everyone is familiar with the stinging nettle, and there is hardly a person who does not eventually come to know the plant’s stinging properties. For this reason, it is often avoided, even though, as an important medicinal plant, it really ought to have a place of honor in every garden.

However, it usually claims this place of honor on its own, because it is very hardy and undemanding and grows almost anywhere you let it.

As far back as ancient times, the stinging nettle was described in detail and used as a remedy. The fiber extracted from its stems served as a substitute for cotton. The active ingredients of the stinging nettle seed are relatively unknown today, although they were already highly praised in a 17th-century herbal. Later, horse traders mixed nettle seeds into the feed, thereby bringing vitality to the muscles and a lustrous sheen to the coat. If nettle seeds are mixed into chicken feed, the hens lay more eggs; nettle seeds are also suitable as an additive to birdseed.

If there were a book on the use of herbs in modern nutrition, nettle seeds would have to be at the top of the list, especially since our ancestors knew exactly what powers lay within these tiny seeds. Of course, they were not yet aware of the individual ingredients, yet they were once found in every love potion.
