History:
This medicinal plant is also known as mountain arnica, probably because it used to be mainly found in the mountains (Alps and Alpine foothills up to 2000 m). In the Black Forest and the Vosges, there are some places where it grows abundantly, covering the meadows in a bright yellow-orange color. Today, arnica is a protected species. However, Arnica montana has now been successfully cultivated, so that the North American meadow arnica (Arnica chamissonis Less ssp. foliosa (Nutt.) Mag.) is no longer approved by the pharmacopoeia.
Goethe used to drink arnica tea when he was suffering from circulatory disorders of the coronary arteries. Arnica was also said to have an aphrodisiac effect.
The bad experiences with overdoses probably date back to this time: impending heart complications, stomach and intestinal disorders. Arnica is a powerful medicinal plant that is mainly used externally as a tincture today.
Botanical description:
The 40 to 60 cm tall, aromatic, glandular-hairy medicinal plant has a simple or slightly branched, upright hairy stem. The stalked, egg-shaped, entire-edged 6-15 cm long basal leaves form an egg-shaped rosette and have 5-7 prominent longitudinal veins on the underside.
