Urtica dioica L., herb, cut, from certified organic cultivation
Almost everyone is familiar with the stinging nettle, and there is hardly anyone who has not sooner or later experienced the burning properties of the plant. For this reason, it is often avoided, even though it is an important medicinal plant that should actually have a place of honor in every garden. However, it usually takes this place of honor for itself, because it is very persistent and undemanding and grows almost anywhere you let it grow.
Nettles were described in detail and used as a remedy as far back as ancient times. The fiber extracted from the stems was used as a substitute for cotton. The active ingredients in nettle seeds are relatively unknown today, although they were highly praised in a 17th-century herbal book. Later, horse traders mixed nettle seeds into their feed to give their horses muscle tone and a shiny coat. Mixing nettle seeds into chicken feed increases egg production, and nettle seeds are also suitable as an additive to bird feed.
If there were a book on the use of herbs in contemporary nutrition, nettle seeds would have to be at the top of the list, especially since our ancestors knew exactly what powers these small seeds contained. Of course, they were not yet aware of the individual ingredients, but they were once found in every love potion.
