Ginger root (Zingiber officinale L.) from the ginger family (Zingiberaceae) is a perennial plant with a branched, aromatic rhizome. Its narrow, reed-like leaves grow on stems up to one meter high. The yellowish-green flowers with purple accents appear in dense spikes. Ginger thrives in tropical and subtropical regions and has been valued as a spice and medicinal plant for centuries.

Known in Ayurveda for its warming properties, it is used to strengthen the digestive fire (Agni). It is mainly used to support the balance of Vata and Kapha, while balancing Pitta in moderation.
