Once the bundles had dried, they were used in rituals to drive away evil spirits and negative energies, to communicate with the gods or ancestors, and to purify places, tipis, objects or people as incense.
Incidentally, since incense burning is referred to as ‘smudging’ by the Native Americans, the incense bundles are also called “smudges” or ‘smudge sticks’. In addition, the terms incense cigar, incense herb stick or incense stick are also frequently used.
Smudging with smudge sticks: How it works
The easiest way to burn a smudge stick is to use a smudge bowl. This is a special incense burner into which one end of the stick is placed and then lit.
If you prefer a more traditional approach, you will need a plate or bowl filled with sand in addition to the smudge stick. When lighting the smudge stick, hold it over the bowl and blow it out as soon as the bundle is burning. To allow smoke to form, you must now blow vigorously into the embers. You can now use the smoking bundle to smudge your home, for example, to perform a cleansing ritual. Blow regularly into the embers to create new smoke.
Make your own smudge sticks
In principle, you can also make your own smudges. To do this, cut the desired herbs into pieces of equal length. A length of about 10-15 cm has proven to be ideal. Next, tie the cut herbs tightly together with natural twine and then tie it crosswise so that a kind of net forms around the bundle. Hang the finished bundle up to dry.
