What is oxymel and how is it made?
Traditionally, it consists of two main ingredients: honey and vinegar. High-quality blossom honey is recommended, as it is not only mild in flavor but also contains valuable enzymes and phytochemicals. Apple cider vinegar, which is often used, adds acidity and additional bioactive compounds.
The base mixture can be enhanced with herbs and spices. Ingredients such as ginger, turmeric, or black cumin oil are traditionally added to vary the properties of the oxymel. These combinations are usually created through maceration, in which the plant components steep in the oxymel for several days or weeks.
Black cumin oil: is traditionally used when a warming, balancing, and aromatic plant is desired.
Honey: provides natural sugars, enzymes, and antioxidants.
