About the Plant

Chanca piedra (Phyllanthus niruri) is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the spurge family (Phyllanthaceae). It grows to a height of up to 60 cm and is characterised by delicate, alternately arranged elliptical leaves that stand densely along its slender, heavily branched stems. Particularly characteristic are the small, spherical seed capsules that develop directly along the stems. These give the plant its unmistakable appearance and serve as a reliable identifying feature. The plant prefers moist, tropical habitats and frequently grows along roadsides and on disturbed ground.

Other common names: Chanca piedra is also known as stonebreaker, kidney stone plant, gallstone herb or gale of the wind. In scientific contexts, the synonyms Phyllanthus amarus and Phyllanthus urinaria are also used. The Spanish name chanca piedra translates literally as "stone breaker". In Ayurvedic medicine the plant is known as Bhumyamalaki.

Origin and harvest time: Chanca piedra is found primarily in the tropical and subtropical regions of South America, Southeast Asia, India and Africa. The plant thrives in warm, humid climates and is commonly found along riverbanks, in gardens and on open ground. The entire herb is typically harvested during the main growing season before the seeds ripen, when the concentration of active compounds is at its highest.

Historical roots: Chanca piedra is one of the longest-used medicinal plants in traditional folk medicine in South America, particularly in Brazil, Peru and India. In Ayurvedic medicine, the plant has been used traditionally for centuries under the name Bhumyamalaki. In the Amazon region especially, chanca piedra is considered one of the most important medicinal plants among indigenous peoples. The plant has also long been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine and in African folk medicine. In recent decades, international scientific interest in Phyllanthus niruri has grown considerably.

Key active constituents:

  • Phyllanthin and hypophyllanthin (lignans): Characteristic secondary plant compounds of the Phyllanthus plant, considered among its most important active constituents.
  • Geraniin (ellagitannin): A polyphenolic plant compound from the tannin group, present in particularly high concentrations in chanca piedra.
  • Flavonoids (quercetin, rutin, kaempferol): Polyphenolic secondary plant compounds with antioxidant properties that contribute to the overall activity of the plant.
  • Alkaloids (phyllanthin, norsecurinine): Nitrogen-containing plant compounds characteristic of the Phyllanthus genus.
  • Bitter compounds: Typical constituents of the plant, referenced in the product designation as a food supplement with natural bitter compounds.
  • Organic acids (ascorbic acid, citric acid): Naturally occurring acids that contribute to the overall phytochemical profile of the plant.

Wirkt

Absolute must during liver & gallbladder cleanses

I've been doing liver cleanses for the past 12 months using Herbathek's Gold Coin Grass (which is also amazing). However, half way through the year, it felt like i needed some additional support and I came across Chanca Piedra, which breaks down stones (calcified stones to a size they can pass with ease & smaller sizes turn to sludge). It made a very big difference in my cleanses and is now the staple products during all of them.
