About the Plant

Sweet wormwood (Artemisia annua) is an annual herbaceous plant from the family Asteraceae and can reach a height of 50 to 200 cm under optimal growing conditions. The upright, brownish stems are strongly branched and bear finely pinnate, silvery-green leaves of approximately 3 to 5 cm in length, which release an intensely aromatic fragrance when crushed. The tiny, yellowish-green flowers appear from August to September in loose, drooping panicles. The small brown seeds spread by self-seeding, allowing the plant to establish rapidly at suitable sites. It thrives in sunny positions on well-drained, nutrient-rich soils and is considered a neophyte in Central Europe.

In popular usage and scientific literature, the plant is also referred to as annual wormwood, Chinese mugwort, or Qing Hao (Chinese). The genus name Artemisia derives from Artemis, the Greek goddess of the hunt and protection.

Habitat and harvest time: Artemisia annua originates from the temperate zones of northern China and Central Asia. In Germany and Central Europe, it can be found scattered along roadsides, riverbanks, and on disturbed ground. The aerial parts of the plant are harvested just before flowering, typically between July and August, as artemisinin content is at its highest at this stage.

Historical roots: Artemisia annua is among the most thoroughly researched medicinal plants in the world. It has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for over 2,000 years, first documented in the classical text of Ge Hong in the 4th century AD. Named after the goddess Artemis, the plant was regarded as a symbol of protection and purification. It did not become widely known in Europe until the 19th century, partly through its establishment along rivers such as the Elbe. Artemisia annua gained international attention from the 1970s onwards through the research of Chinese scientist Tu Youyou, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2015 for her work on artemisinin.

Key active constituents:

  • Artemisinin: A sesquiterpene lactone and the central plant compound of Artemisia annua, subject to extensive scientific research
  • Flavonoids (incl. quercetin, kaempferol): Polyphenolic compounds with widely studied properties in herbal medicine
  • Essential oils (incl. cineole, camphor, alpha-pinene, limonene, borneol): Responsible for the plant's characteristically intense aromatic fragrance
  • Bitter compounds: Natural secondary plant substances typical of plants in the Artemisia genus
  • Polyphenols: Further bioactive compounds investigated in both ethnobotanical and modern research

Sehr gesund

Werde ich wieder kaufen? Der Geschmack ist vieleicht am Anfang etwas ungewohnt weil auch Bitterstoffe drinnen sind, aber deshalb ist die Tinktur ja so wertvoll. ???
