About the Plant

Black walnut belongs to the walnut family (Juglandaceae) and is native to eastern North America. The tree can grow up to 30 metres tall and forms sturdy, deeply furrowed leaves. Its dark brown nut is surrounded by a thick, green husk that is difficult to remove. Unlike the more familiar English walnut (Juglans regia), black walnut grows notably more robust and resistant to disease.

Other names: In German-speaking regions, Juglans nigra is also known as Amerikanische Walnuss or Schwarznuss.

Habitat and harvest season: Black walnut grows predominantly in the moist deciduous forests of eastern North America. The green hulls are harvested in late summer, while still unripe and particularly rich in plant compounds.
