Black cumin is an annual plant of the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae). It grows up to 30 cm high and has finely pinnate, green leaves. The plant produces delicate, blue to white flowers, which later ripen into capsules containing black, triangular seeds.
In Ayurveda, black cumin (Nigella sativa) is valued for its many properties. It is particularly recommended for the Vata dosha because it has a warming and balancing effect. Traditionally, black cumin is used to strengthen the digestive fire (Agni) and to support physical balance.
Indications
for allergic reactions, (inflammatory) infections, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, bronchitis, asthma, digestive problems and high blood pressure
How to use
Add 1-2 teaspoons to 250ml of hot water (80°C), leave to steep for 5-10 minutes and strain. Can be used as a versatile spice.
