Marshmallow (Althaea officinalis) is an ancient cultivated plant from the mallow family. With its velvety, softly hairy leaves and delicate pink flowers, it was already known in ancient times and was later cultivated in monastery gardens across Europe.

Marshmallow leaves are characterized by their velvety surface, their mild, slightly herbaceous scent, and their high content of plant mucilage—a feature that has often been highlighted throughout history.
