Our astaxanthin comes from the freshwater microalga Haematococcus pluvialis, cultivated under controlled conditions in a closed photobioreactor. The capsule shell is entirely plant-based, making the product suitable for vegetarians and vegans. Each capsule contains 2 mg of natural astaxanthin.

Use

Take 2 capsules daily with a glass of water at mealtime, for example one capsule with breakfast and one with lunch. As astaxanthin is fat-soluble, it is best taken with a meal that contains some fat. You will find further information in the “Preparation” and “Area of Application” tabs.

About the Product

Astaxanthin is a natural, deep red pigment from the group of xanthophylls, a subgroup of the carotenoids. Unlike the better-known beta-carotene, the molecule carries oxygen-containing groups at both ends, which gives it its distinctive colour and structure. In nature, astaxanthin is produced by microalgae, some yeasts and bacteria. Through the food chain it reaches krill, shrimp, lobster and salmon, giving them their pinkish-red colour. Flamingos, too, owe their pink plumage to the carotenoids in their diet.

The alga: Haematococcus pluvialis, also known as the blood rain alga, is a single-celled green alga. It lives in rain puddles, birdbaths and rock pools that repeatedly dry out. As long as conditions are good, it swims about green and mobile, propelled by two flagella. When light becomes too intense, water scarce or nutrients run low, it switches to a dormant stage with a thick cell wall and stores large amounts of astaxanthin, turning a bright red. In this stage it can survive drought and intense sunlight, often for years. Cultivation in a photobioreactor makes use of exactly this ability: the alga is first grown in quantity and then stimulated by light to produce astaxanthin.

Other names: Blood rain alga, Haematococcus, astaxanthin (from the Greek “astakos”, lobster, and “xanthos”, yellow).

Production: The algae grow in a closed system of glass tubes, shielded from outside contamination. Once they have turned red, the cells are harvested, gently broken open and processed into an astaxanthin-rich powder.

Historical roots: The red colouring of rainwater puddles intrigued naturalists as early as the 19th century and was at times interpreted as “blood rain”. Only the microscope revealed that tiny algae were behind it. Astaxanthin itself was first isolated from lobster in the 1930s, hence its name. Since the 1990s, it has been produced on a larger scale from Haematococcus pluvialis.
