Conventional synthetic vitamins differ greatly from natural vitamins, both chemically and structurally. Natural vitamins consist of numerous different components. Various enzymes, coenzymes and many other factors are responsible for ensuring that the body can absorb and process vitamins.

In contrast, synthetic "vitamins" act more like foreign chemicals attempting to mimic a single part of the actual vitamin. Vitamin C, for instance, is actually a vitamin C complex, made up of several important components. Ascorbic acid, which is sold in isolation as a dietary supplement in pharmacies, is merely the outer shell of the vitamin C complex. When consumed in artificial, synthetic form, it is often excreted by the body almost without effect.

If only one isolated part of the vitamin C complex is taken in synthetic form, the body must draw the remaining components from its own vitamin reserves in order to process the synthetic substance as a complete vitamin.
