What are the beneficial properties of medicinal mushrooms?
The use of medicinal mushrooms for health purposes has been known as mycotherapy since the 1990s. The reason for their many beneficial properties is the interaction of rich micronutrients such as minerals, amino acids, vitamins and enzymes, as well as the active ingredients specific to each mushroom with health-promoting properties. These are often specific polysaccharides with immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Another advantage of medicinal mushrooms is that consuming them or mushroom extracts is virtually free of side effects.
Medicinal mushrooms are particularly valued for their anti-inflammatory, cytostatic and antioxidant properties. Essentially, medicinal mushrooms help the immune system to heal itself. Medicinal mushrooms are being used with increasing success in Europe, particularly in reducing free radicals and oxidative stress, treating allergies and as a supplement in cancer therapies. The long-term use of medicinal mushrooms is also often recommended for chronic conditions and autoimmune diseases.
What are the most important medicinal mushrooms?
The list of medicinal mushrooms is long, with the following specimens being particularly popular:
- Cordyceps sinensis (Chinese caterpillar fungus)
- Reishi (shiny patent fungus)
- Hericium erinaceus (hedgehog spiny beard)
- Agaricus blazei murrill (almond mushroom, sun mushroom)
- Auricularia (Judas ear, Chinese morel, Mu-Err)
- Coriolus versicolor (Butterfly spore)
- Polyporus umbellatus (oak hare)
- Maitake (rattling sponge, leaf spore)
- Pleurotus (oyster mushroom, side mushroom)
- Chaga (slanting iridescent mushroom)
Extract or powder?
Medicinal mushrooms are usually used as loose powder, pressed into tablets or as mushroom extract, mostly in the form of capsules. The powder is made from dried mushrooms by grinding them and contains all the ingredients of the respective mushroom.
Extracts are obtained from the mushroom powder using a solvent such as water or alcohol. They are about 20 times more concentrated than the powder and have a correspondingly stronger effect on the immune system.
However, extracts only contain the soluble components of medicinal mushrooms. These include a wealth of active ingredients, in particular highly active polysaccharides. Nevertheless, this is not the entire mushroom as nature intended. Extracts are usually used in a very targeted manner for serious illnesses. Mushroom powder, on the other hand, is somewhat more difficult for the body to absorb, as the cell walls must first be ‘broken down’.
