Astaxanthin is a natural carotenoid pigment extracted from the microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis. This algae is native to sunny, clear waters such as those found in Hawaii and accumulates particularly high levels of astaxanthin under these conditions. The intense red pigment also gives well-known marine animals such as salmon and shrimp their characteristic color.
