Black maca root, also known as black maca, is the most potent variety of the maca plant. It originates from the high altitudes of the Peruvian Andes and has been traditionally valued for centuries as a natural tonic. 

Archaeological finds and historical chronicles indicate that maca was cultivated by indigenous communities as early as pre-colonial times, especially in regions above 4,000 meters. Among the various varieties of maca, black maca was considered one of the rarer forms locally. It was traditionally dried, ground into flour or powder, and used in everyday dishes.

In historical Andean cultures, maca was an important staple food and was used in both ritual and practical contexts.
