History

The healing powers of thyme have been known for many centuries. Hildegard von Bingen recommended thyme for shortness of breath or whooping cough, and older herb books such as Gart der Gesundheit (Garden of Health) and the book by Italian physician Pietro Andrea Mattioli also recommended thyme for many ailments such as chest pain, to stimulate the appetite, for digestive problems, for warts, or for wound treatment. It was used as honey, pure, as a poultice, boiled in vinegar or wine.

Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) belongs to the Lamiaceae family.

Ingredients of thyme

  • Essential oils (borneol, pinene, cymol, camphor, carvacrol, limonene, linalool, thymol)
  • Flavonoids 
  • Tannins 
  • Coumarin 
  • Salicylates 
  • Saponins

Thymian in gemahlener Form ist vielseitig in der Küche verwendbar.

Um Thymian gezielt als Heilpflanze einzusetzen, stehen verschiedene Anwendungs- und Darreichungsformen zur Verfügung. Neben dem Frischpflanzensaft, Tropfen oder Sirup besteht auch die Möglichkeit Thymian als Tee zu sich zu nehmen. 1 Teelöffel mit 250 ml heißem Wasser (80°C) übergießen, 5-10 Min. ziehen lassen, abseihen - mit Honig oder Zitrone bei Bedarf.

Bei Erkältungen empfiehlt es sich, Thymian als unterstützenden Badezusatz zu verwenden.

Achtung! Thymian nicht in großen Mengen während der Schwangerschaft verwenden.
