Spruce resin is the natural resin of various spruce species of the genus Picea from the Pinaceae family. It is produced as a plant exudate when the bark is damaged and the resin ducts of the spruce secrete their contents. The fresh resin is viscous and light yellow, but hardens in the air to form solid, amber-colored pieces. Botanically, it consists mainly of resin acids, terpenes, and small amounts of essential oils. This resin forms a protective covering over damaged areas of the spruce.
Spruce resin already played an important role in the folk culture of Central Europe: it was harvested directly from the tree by forest gatherers, often dried in small lumps, burned in living rooms, farmhouses, and mountain huts, and used as an ingredient in traditional herbal and resin mixtures; in old incense chronicles of the Alpine region, spruce resin is often described as “forest resin,” “pitch resin,” or “forest pitch.”
