Equisetum arvense L., ground herb, Demeter, from certified organic cultivation

History:

Around 400 million years ago, tree-sized horsetails populated entire forests alongside giant ferns and mosses. One of the many remnants of this ancient vascular spore plant is the field horsetail, also known to many as “zinnkraut” (tin herb).

Field horsetail owes its common name “horsetail” to its former use. It was mainly used as a cleaning agent for tin objects.

As a medicinal plant, field horsetail was already used in ancient times as a source of silicic acid and was praised for its hemostatic properties.

After falling out of favor for a while, Sebastian Kneipp revived horsetail's popularity as a medicinal plant and used it to treat rheumatism and gout, among other things.

Horsetail is widespread in Europe and North Asia. It grows mainly in fields, meadows, farmland, and roadsides.
