Copal is a traditional tree resin that was used as sacred incense in Mayan and Aztec rituals. When copal was burned, the rising smoke was considered a medium for communicating with the gods and the so-called “brain of heaven.”
In Mesoamerican mythology, the term “brain of heaven” refers to a supreme creative deity, also known as the heart of heaven.
Copal smoke symbolizes the connection between human consciousness, cosmic intelligence, and divine order. To this day, copal is used in spiritual ceremonies as an offering, a purifying agent, and a carrier of prayers.
