Name: Black Walnut Hulls (German: Schwarznussschalen)
Latin Name: Juglans nigra
Product Form: Hulls, whole, natural
Ingredients: 100% black walnut hulls (Juglans nigra), whole.
Unlike our black walnut herbal drops, which are made as a concentrated extract, our black walnut hulls offer you the raw material in its original, whole form. The irregular hull pieces retain their natural structure, colour and texture in full.
Use
As a decoction or infusion: The whole black walnut hulls are well suited for simmering into a strong, dark decoction. See the "Preparation" section for details.
As a natural dye: Black walnut hulls are among the best-known plant dyes and have been used for generations to dye textiles, yarn, wood and leather. Simmering or soaking the hulls produces warm, deep brown tones, with intensity adjustable through quantity and soaking time. This traditional dyeing technique remains popular among hobby and natural dyers today.
Traditional plant knowledge: Black walnut hulls are among the natural products long valued in American folk tradition, where they are mentioned in connection with a conscious diet. For more on use, see the "Application" tab.
About the Plant
Black walnut (Juglans nigra) belongs to the walnut family (Juglandaceae) and is native to eastern North America. Its thick, green husk encloses the dark brown nut and turns a characteristic brown as it dries. Botanically, black walnut differs from the more familiar English walnut (Juglans regia) mainly through its more robust growth habit and its thicker, harder shell.
Other names: In German-speaking regions, Juglans nigra is also known as Amerikanische Walnuss or Schwarzwalnuss.
Habitat and harvest season: Black walnut grows in the deciduous forests of eastern North America. The hulls are separated after the nut harvest, cleaned and then gently dried.
Historical roots: Indigenous peoples of North America used black walnut hulls as a natural dye for textiles and craftwork long before European settlement. The hull was also historically valued as a raw material for ink and for tanning leather. This traditional use as a dye continues to this day, making black walnut hulls a valued natural product for creative applications.
Key Components:
- Tannins: responsible for the astringent properties and dyeing effect of the hulls
- Juglone: a natural pigment that produces the characteristic brown tone when dyeing
- Natural pigments: give the hulls their deep brown colour
