Milk thistle is a plant from the Asteraceae family and, more specifically, the Carduoideae subfamily, which owes its name to the ring thistle (Carduus). The milk thistle herb, which grows up to one and a half metres tall, is native to southern and central Europe and the steppes of North Africa and grows as a biennial plant. It has the typical thistles' spines and forms burrs in autumn.
Milk thistle is very rich in silymarin. Silymarin is a natural mixture of various plant substances: silibinin, isosilibinin, silychristin and silydianin. Silymarin is said to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
The most common uses of milk thistle include allergies, inflammation, gynaecological disorders, gallbladder problems, gallbladder pain, vascular disorders, ulcers, skin rashes, cramps, liver problems, gastrointestinal problems, spleen problems, muscle pain, neuralgia, rheumatism and poisoning.
