Latin Name: Urtica dioica L.
Product Form: Seeds, whole, dried
Ingredients: 100% whole nettle seeds from certified organic cultivation

Nettle seeds are among the oldest natural products in European folk medicine. They are valued as a nutrient-rich supplement and are today experiencing a true renaissance as an organic superfood. Please note: due to production and transport conditions, nettle seeds may contain a small proportion of sand, soil, or nettle seed powder.

Uses and Properties

As a nutritional supplement and superfood: Nettle seeds have traditionally been used as a natural source of strength and vitality. They can be easily integrated into everyday life and may help support an active lifestyle. Many people appreciate them as a nourishing natural product that has been used in folk medicine for centuries.

As a culinary ingredient: The small seeds are versatile in the kitchen. They can be sprinkled over muesli, yoghurt, or salads and add a nutrient-rich note to smoothies, soups, or bread dough. Their mild, slightly nutty flavour makes them a straightforward addition to the daily diet.

In herbal blends: Nettle seeds can be combined with other herbs and blend particularly well with classic meadow herbs.

About the Plant

The common stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) is a perennial herbaceous plant from the family Urticaceae, reaching a height of 60 to 150 cm. Its ovate to lanceolate leaves are arranged in opposite pairs, coarsely serrated, and bear the characteristic stinging hairs that cause a burning sensation on contact. The small, inconspicuous greenish flowers are dioecious and appear from June to October in hanging panicles. The seeds are contained in small, oval nutlets and ripen between July and October. The plant is widespread throughout Europe, Asia, and North America, preferring nitrogen-rich, moist soils near settlements, along roadsides, and on disturbed ground.

In folk tradition, the stinging nettle is also known as burn nettle, burn weed, or simply nettle.

Habitat and harvest time: The stinging nettle is one of the most widespread wild plants in Central Europe, growing on nutrient-rich soils almost everywhere: along fences, riverbanks, roadsides, and on ruderal land. Nettle seeds are harvested between July and October, once fully ripened and before they have completely dispersed.

Historical roots: Nettles have accompanied humankind for thousands of years as a useful, fibre, and medicinal plant. As far back as antiquity and the Middle Ages, all parts of the plant were used: fibres for textiles, leaves as food and medicine, and seeds as a strengthening and restorative natural product. In monastic medicine, nettle seeds were considered particularly valuable and were used to support strength and vitality. Throughout the folk medicine traditions of many European regions, they were highly prized for their nutritional value and traditional properties. Today, nettle seeds are enjoying a genuine rediscovery as an organic superfood.
