Dandelion is one of the most well-known wild plants in Central Europe and has been valued in natural medicine for centuries. The dandelion leaves impress with their characteristically slightly bitter taste and their versatile range of applications. Whether as dandelion tea, in the kitchen or for traditional springtime support: dandelion is a true all-rounder among native medicinal herbs.
Uses and Effects
As dandelion tea: The dried, loose dandelion leaves in organic quality are ideal for preparing aromatic dandelion tea. Its mildly bitter taste makes it a characterful herbal tea. Organic dandelion tea is particularly popular as part of spring cleansing routines, traditionally used to support metabolism and digestion. Further preparation instructions can be found in the "Preparation" tab.
As a culinary herb: Fresh or dried dandelion leaves can be used in a variety of ways in the kitchen. Their slightly bitter aroma adds a distinctive note to salads, herb quark and wild herb mixes. Dried, they are also suitable for seasoning soups and herbal teas.
Traditional use: Dandelion is traditionally used to support liver, gallbladder and digestive function. In European folk medicine it is regarded as a classic spring herb for detoxifying support. Further information on application can be found in the "Indications" tab.
About the Plant
Taraxacum officinale is a perennial herbaceous plant from the daisy family (Asteraceae). The basal, deeply toothed leaves form a flat rosette and can grow 10 to 40 cm long depending on the location. The characteristic backward-pointing teeth along the leaf margins gave the plant its German name. The hollow, upright flower stalk bears a single, bright yellow flower head. After flowering, the well-known spherical seed head forms, whose seeds disperse in the wind. When damaged, all parts of the plant exude a whitish milky sap. The plant is extremely adaptable and colonises meadows, roadsides and gardens throughout Europe.
Other names: Dandelion is also known in popular usage as blowball, clockflower, pissabed, lion's tooth, priest's crown, swine's snout, white endive or wild endive.
Habitat and harvest time: Dandelion is widely distributed throughout Europe and colonises almost every habitat, from meadows and roadsides to gardens and wasteland. The leaves are preferably harvested in spring, when they are still young and particularly tender. The main flowering period is between March and May, with a second flowering possible in autumn.
Historical roots: Dandelion is one of the oldest known medicinal plants in Europe and was already described in the Middle Ages by Hildegard von Bingen. In traditional European natural medicine it was used primarily in spring to support the liver and gallbladder. The plant has also been known for centuries in Arabic and Chinese medicine. As a classic spring herb, it held a firm place in many cultures for seasonal cleansing and detoxifying applications.
Key active constituents:
- Bitter compounds (taraxacin, taraxacerin): Characteristic bitter substances traditionally used to support digestive and gallbladder activity.
- Inulin: A plant-based polysaccharide with prebiotic properties that can support the intestinal flora.
- Flavonoids (incl. luteolin): Secondary plant compounds with antioxidant activity.
- Phytosterols: Plant-based sterols that may play a role in various bodily functions.
- Minerals and vitamins: Notably potassium, calcium as well as vitamin C and vitamin A in significant amounts.
- Hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives: Polyphenolic compounds with antioxidant properties.
