Name: Willow Bark (German: Weidenrinde)
Latin Name: Salix alba
Product Form: Bark, cut
Ingredients: 100% willow bark (Salix alba), cut, from certified organic cultivation.
The bark of the white willow is among Europe's most traditional medicinal plants and connects herbal lore with the history of modern chemistry like few other plants. Its compound salicin made it a staple of European herbal traditions for centuries.
Use
As a tea: The cut willow bark is well suited for preparing a spicy, bitter infusion, a longer simmer of the bark pieces is recommended for a stronger decoction. See the "Preparation" section for details.
Traditional monastic knowledge: Willow bark is among the plants already valued in medieval monastic medicine and traditional folk medicine, and it remains mentioned to this day in connection with wellbeing and inner warmth. Willow bark gained particular renown through its compound salicin, which can be converted into salicylic acid in the body, a connection considered one of the best-known links between traditional herbal medicine and modern chemistry. For more on use, see the "Application" tab.
About the Plant
Salix alba, the white willow, belongs to the willow family (Salicaceae) and is native to large parts of Europe, western Asia and North Africa. The tree grows preferentially along riverbanks and in moist floodplain landscapes, where it can reach heights of up to 25 metres. Characteristic are its narrow, silvery-grey shimmering leaves, which give the tree its name. The bark of young branches is used, as it is particularly rich in salicin.
Other names: Willow bark is also known as sallow, osier, or fever bark.
Habitat and harvest season: The white willow grows preferentially in moist, sunny locations along rivers and streams. The bark is traditionally peeled from young, two- to three-year-old branches in spring and then dried.
Historical roots: The willow was already known as a significant plant in ancient Egypt and ancient Greece; the Papyrus Ebers, one of the oldest surviving medical texts, contains references to its use. Hippocrates of Kos, often called the "father of medicine," is said to have mentioned the bark in his writings. From the compound salicin, chemist Felix Hoffmann developed the basis for producing acetylsalicylic acid at Bayer in 1897, later known worldwide as aspirin, which is why willow bark is still occasionally referred to as "natural aspirin," though the two substances are not chemically identical.
Key Compounds:
- Salicin: the central compound of willow bark, can be converted into salicylic acid in the body
- Flavonoids: polyphenolic plant compounds typical of many types of bark
- Tannins: secondary plant compounds with astringent properties
- Essential oils: contribute to the bark's characteristic aroma
