Much of what happens to us in our everyday lives has a direct impact on our bones and joints: Every step, every sports session, every time we stand up and sit down, even the food we eat has an impact on our musculoskeletal system. In this article, we would like to show you which medicinal herbs can provide you with additional support in the treatment of bone and joint pain and how these remedies can also ensure healthy bones and joints as a preventative measure.
Common causes of bone and joint pain
Before we take a closer look at which herbs and natural remedies can help with treatment, let’s take a look at the most common causes of the problems. These include, among others:
- Injuries as a result of exercise (such as sports injuries)
- accidents
- Increased wear and tear on joints
- skeletal abnormalities
- bad habits or incorrect weight-bearing (e.g. unfavourable sleeping positions, bad shoes, overweight)
- ageing
- Acute and chronic inflammation of the bones or joints
- autoimmune diseases
- vitamin deficiency
- Insufficient intake of micronutrients
A lack of vitamins or an inadequate supply of bone-relevant building materials such as calcium, magnesium or silica can lead to diseases such as arteriosclerosis or osteoporosis. Another example of how the wrong diet can affect our bones is a lack of vitamin C, which can lead to massive disturbances in bone metabolism.
If the joints are overloaded, for example due to obesity, increasing ageing or wear and tear caused by intensive physical work, the diagnosis is often osteoarthritis or osteoporosis. In osteoarthritis, the wear and tear on the joints causes pain, joint noises or joint effusion. Osteoporosis, on the other hand, is a typical age-related disease in which the bone substance slowly deteriorates. Many of the symptoms of these diseases can be alleviated by a conscious diet and the additional intake of medicinal plants.
Medicinal herbs for use in bone and joint complaints
In herbal medicine, medicinal plants have also been used for many years to treat problems with the joints or bones. Even if they do not promise to cure the diseases, many of the following remedies can still help to alleviate the symptoms.
The most popular natural remedies include
- Horsetail
- arnica
- comfrey
- nettle
- goutweed
- Green-lipped mussels
- Curcuma
- Horseradish
- Devil’s claw
- Frankincense
Horsetail, for example, supports bone formation thanks to the silicic acid contained in the plant. It also helps and accelerates the healing process of bone fractures and has a positive effect on joint inflammation.
Comfrey is – as the name might already suggest – a medicinal plant that was used over 2000 years ago for its positive effect on broken bones, dislocations and joint complaints. Today, the plant is generally used as an ointment for bruises, back pain and joint complaints. Comfrey ointment can provide rapid relief, especially for sports injuries.
The green-lipped mussel is also considered an effective remedy for joint pain and osteoarthritis. It is said to have anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving and cartilage-protecting properties, which have already been named in numerous studies.
Another remedy that is already familiar to many from the kitchen and is also used for joint pain and osteoarthritis: Turmeric. The curcumin contained in the root has active ingredients that can inhibit inflammation in the tissue. This can reduce swelling in the joint and often significantly reduce the pain.
Devil’s claw has also helped many patients with joint pain. The plant from the African savannah has long been used by the people living there to treat fever, pain and gastrointestinal complaints. The active ingredients that are valuable for our body are found in the root. In laboratory tests, researchers have found that they have pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory properties, which makes devil’s claw a good addition to arthritis therapy. The relieving effect usually only occurs after a few weeks.
In traditional Indian medicine, Ayurveda, frankincense is often used for various conditions including painful joints. When taken orally, frankincense extracts are said to inhibit inflammation and relieve pain, making it a good companion for osteoarthritis therapy.
